Insulation contractor services in Memphis, TN
Barrier Memphis Insulation Company is an insulation contractor in Memphis, TN, with 16 services covering attics, walls, crawl spaces, basements and commercial buildings. Most calls start with a hot upstairs, cold floors or a power bill that keeps climbing, and the fix is usually sealing the leaks and getting even coverage where it's thin. The price turns on how many inches you already have, whether the old material is wet or full of droppings and has to come out, how much air sealing the house needs and whether foam makes sense. The schedule turns on removal and on any roof leak or mold that has to be fixed first. At the estimate visit I'll tell you what we'd do and why.
Spray foam goes on wet, expands into every gap and seals air while it insulates, which is why we lean toward it when your ductwork runs through the attic. It costs more than loose fill, so if sealing the gaps and topping up will do the job, we'll tell you that instead.
View serviceHot upstairs or a bill that jumps every summer? We seal the attic floor first, then bring the insulation to an even depth all the way out to the edges, not piled deep in the middle and thin where it meets the roof.
View serviceBlown-in is loose fill we blow through a hose, so it settles around wiring and framing where batts leave gaps. It's the usual way we top up an attic that already has a few inches.
View serviceNot sure where the drafts are coming from? We look at the whole house, attic, walls, floors and crawl space, and fix the weak spots in the order that makes the rest work.
View serviceWhen old insulation is soaked, matted or full of droppings, new material laid on top just keeps the problem. We vacuum it out, clean the space and start fresh.
View serviceCold floors usually trace back to the crawl space under the house. We insulate the floor above it or the crawl space walls, depending on how yours is built and vented.
View serviceOlder houses often have walls with little or nothing inside them. We blow insulation in through small holes and patch them afterward, so you don't have to tear out drywall.
View serviceAir sealing is closing the gaps around pipes, wires, can lights and the attic hatch before any insulation goes in. It's the step that's easiest to skip and the one that makes everything else work.
View serviceWe insulate basement walls and the rim joist, the wood band sitting on top of the foundation, so the rooms above stay warmer and less drafty.
View serviceClosed-cell foam is a dense foam that blocks moisture as well as air. We use it where water is a worry, like crawl space walls and rim joists, or where there's little room for thickness.
View serviceOpen-cell foam is the softer, lighter foam, and it seals and quiets a roofline or walls for less than closed-cell. It isn't the pick for damp spots, and we'll tell you if yours is one.
View serviceProperty managers and building owners call us for offices, rentals and shops. We plan the work around tenants and business hours so the building keeps running.
View serviceA crawl space vapor barrier is heavy plastic laid over the dirt and up the walls to keep ground moisture out of the house. It's where we start when a crawl space smells musty or the floors feel damp.
View serviceWe install vapor barriers in walls, attics and basements where moisture could otherwise reach the insulation and framing. Which side it goes on matters, so we place it based on how your house is built.
View serviceBefore we add an inch up top, we seal the attic floor around the hatch, chimney, plumbing stacks and light fixtures. That stops air from moving straight through the new insulation.
View serviceRetrofit insulation adds insulation to a finished house without opening it up. It's for owners of older homes who want the comfort fixed without a remodel.

Insulating homes across Memphis and the cities nearby
Memphis is a big city, and we work in neighborhoods all over it, from the streets around Overton Park to the ones out past Shelby Farms Park. The houses we see run from older homes with a few worn inches in the attic to newer ones where nobody sealed the gaps around the lights and pipes, and each one needs a different plan.
For commercial buildings, construction permits in Memphis, Germantown, Lakeland, Millington, Arlington and unincorporated Shelby County come from one joint city and county office, Construction Enforcement, which also reviews plans and inspects buildings. If you're not sure whether your home job needs a permit, that office is the place to ask. When a job does call for one, we handle the application and set up the inspections with the office that covers your address, so the paperwork isn't on you.
Why hire our insulation crew
Plans that include your HVAC
I spent years in heating and cooling before starting this business in 2021, so I look at your ducts and equipment along with the empty spaces. The plan you get covers how the whole house works together.
Leaks sealed before insulation
Insulation slows heat, but it won't stop air pushing through gaps around pipes, wiring or the hatch. Our installers seal those first, so the insulation you pay for actually does its job.
Problems flagged at the visit
If there's a roof leak, mold or a wet spot, I'll point it out when I'm there and we'll plan the job around fixing it first. New insulation over a problem just hides it.
Read more about us, or contact us to set up a visit.
Tell us what's going on with your house
We reply to every request within one business day to set up a time, and I come out myself to look at the job. There's no obligation, and by the end of the visit you'll know what we'd do and why.
What careful insulation work looks like
Insulation questions from Memphis homeowners
How do I know if my attic in Memphis needs more insulation?
If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, or the depth is deep in the middle and thin at the edges, it probably needs more. Hot rooms upstairs and a high power bill point the same way. At the visit I measure the inches already up there and check that they're dry and clean.
Should old insulation be removed before adding new insulation?
Only if it's wet, moldy, matted or full of droppings. Clean, dry insulation can usually stay and get topped up, but fresh material over a soaked or dirty layer keeps the problem in your attic. I'll check it at the visit and tell you which way your house goes.
Do I have to leave the house during spray foam insulation?
Yes, for spray foam you'll be out of the house while it goes on and for the wait the foam maker sets afterward, called the re-entry time. We'll tell you that time before we book, so you can plan for kids and pets. Blown-in and air sealing jobs usually let you stay home.
How long will the insulation crew be in my attic?
It depends on the size of the attic, how much air sealing it needs and whether old insulation has to come out first. A roof leak or mold that needs fixing before we start adds time too. We'll go over the schedule for your house at the estimate visit.
What should I do before the insulation crew shows up?
Clear a path to the attic hatch or crawl space door and move anything stored right below it. If you keep boxes in the attic, we'll talk at the visit about what needs to come down. Keep pets in a closed room while we work.
Will insulating my crawl space fix cold floors?
Usually, yes, as long as the crawl space is dry first. If the dirt is damp or the space smells musty, we start with a vapor barrier over the ground and then insulate. Insulation in a wet crawl space just gives the moisture something to soak into.
Can air sealing make my house too tight to breathe?
It can if nobody plans for fresh air, so I check the furnace, water heater and anything else that burns fuel before we seal. We also keep the eave vents clear so the attic can breathe and moisture doesn't build up in the framing. Safe air in the house comes first on every plan.
