Spray foam insulation in Memphis TN - the right foam for your attic and ducts
Hot upstairs or ducts baking under the roof? We fit the right foam to the space so the house stops leaking air you pay for.

Is spray foam the right insulation for my Memphis house?
Spray foam insulation is foam we spray under the roof deck or into open walls to slow heat moving in and out of your house, and when it goes under the roof it also seals the air leaks that make your system run longer. For a lot of Memphis homes, that usually means a more comfortable upstairs and a house that holds onto the air you pay to heat and cool.
Most people call about foam because the upstairs runs hot, the room over the garage never feels right, or the power bill keeps climbing. The price moves with which foam goes in, how many square feet we cover and how thick, and whether old insulation has to come out first through our insulation removal work. The schedule mostly turns on how long the foam maker says you need to be out of the house, so I'll go over your own price and timing when I come out to look.
How we put in spray foam insulation
The first thing I sort out at the visit is whether open-cell or closed-cell fits your space and where your heating and cooling equipment sits, because that decides where the foam goes. I also look for anything up there that burns fuel and check how the house gets fresh air, since I want it safe to live in once we tighten it up. Before the work day, we help you plan your time out of the house, because the foam maker sets how long that is. Then our installers pull out any old insulation that's soaked or full of droppings so we're not burying a problem, cover what shouldn't get foam, spray to the depth we agreed on and clean up.
Foam costs more than loose fill, and it seals air while it insulates, so it earns its price when the ductwork lives in the attic. If yours doesn't, I'll usually tell you to skip foam up there, seal the gaps around lights, pipes and the hatch, and top up with blown-in insulation, loose fill blown in through a hose, because that does the job for less. That's the heart of our attic insulation work, and we keep the eave vents clear so a vented attic keeps breathing.
Open-cell foam
This is soft, spongy foam that swells to fill odd shapes and costs less, so it's the usual fit under a roof deck where there's room for the thickness it needs. It suits homeowners who want the attic brought inside the house without paying for the denser foam.
Closed-cell foam
This is dense, rigid foam that blocks moisture and packs more insulation into each inch, so it suits tight spots like shallow rafters, crawl space walls and rim joists, the wood band where the floor framing sits on the foundation. It costs more, so we use it where the space calls for it.
Spray foam insulation permits and houses in Memphis
Work in Memphis and unincorporated Shelby County falls under the Memphis and Shelby County permit office, which issues construction permits and inspects building work, and the same office covers jobs we do in Germantown and Millington. Whether your particular foam job needs a permit is something we confirm with that office for your address, and when one's required, we handle the application and set up the inspections so you don't have to.
A lot of the houses we see around Memphis have a room over the garage that runs hot or cold, and the leaks are usually in the floor over the garage and the short walls tucked under the roof, so that's where we aim the foam.

Spray foam questions from Memphis homeowners
What is the best way to choose between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Weigh what the space needs against the price, because each foam wins at something different. Closed-cell slows heat about twice as well per inch and can also act as a moisture barrier, which is part of why it costs more. Open-cell lets water vapor pass through but is much better at deadening sound. I'll tell you which fits your space when I come out.
How much does spray foam insulation cost in Memphis?
Spray foam in Memphis usually runs about $1,600 to $4,000 to cover 1,000 square feet with 3 inches of foam, going by one local price guide. Open-cell sits toward the low end of that range and closed-cell toward the high end. Your price depends on your square footage, the depth and the prep, and I'll give you the figure for your house at the estimate.
How long do we have to stay out of the house after spray foam?
Some foam makers recommend 24 hours before anyone goes back in, but the time varies by product. Ask the maker or supplier of the foam going into your house for its time, and plan where everyone, kids and pets included, will stay until then. We'll tell you which product we're using so you can check.
Is spray foam a good choice if someone in my house has asthma?
It can be, but anyone with asthma, respiratory allergies, a skin condition or an earlier sensitivity to isocyanates, one of the chemicals the foam is made from, should read the product information carefully first. If that information gives you pause, other kinds of insulation can do the job, and I'll talk through them with you.
How do I know if spray foam under my roof deck is right for my attic?
It usually makes sense when your heating and cooling equipment and its ducts sit in the attic, because foam under the roof deck brings them inside the insulated part of the house, so air leaking from the ducts still heats or cools your rooms. A sealed attic still needs a way to remove moisture. Any equipment up there that burns fuel should be a sealed-combustion, direct-vent unit that vents outdoors.
Does spray foam insulation need to be covered after it's installed?
Some does and some doesn't. Depending on the product or the code, certain spray foams need a thermal or ignition barrier over them, such as a coating or drywall. I'll tell you at the estimate whether the foam we'd use needs one, since it adds to the job.
